The Integrative Veterinary Oncology (IVO) facility offers a variety of treatment options for pets with cancer. Dr. Hershey realized the benefits of oxygen therapy and installed the hyperbaric chamber as an adjunct to the traditional Eastern and Western treatments offered at IVO.
IVO's Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is licensed by IVO and is the only one available in this region. IVO makes it available for other veterinarians to incorporate this treatment for their patients.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) allows a patient to absorb up to 4 times the normal amount of oxygen. This increases the oxygenation of all organs, tissues, and body fluids. It is the pressure of the chamber that allows for the much greater absorption of the oxygen provided. |
When a patient is in the chamber, the increased pressure causes the blood plasma, and other liquids of the body, to absorb much larger quantities of oxygen, greatly increasing oxygen uptake by the cells, tissues, glands, organs, brain, and all fluids of the body.
Conditions which HBOT has shown a good success rate:
Severe skin and tissue damage
Fracture healing
Major systemic or local infections
Intervertebral disc herniation
Inflammatory conditions such as pancreatitis
Nerve damage
Post-surgical swelling and recovery
Acute ischemic conditions
Infectious conditions such as severe wound infection
Some aspects of neurological degeneration
Problem wound such as burns, ulcers, gangrene and necrosis
Stimulating new bone cell activity
Brain/nerve damage
Arthritis
HBOT treatments generally last one hour. During treatment, pets remain in the pressurized chamber while breathing 100% oxygen. Treatments are proven to stimulate stem cell production up to eight times, which enhances the healing process and allows the body to heal itself.
